Tips for Acing Your WAEC Exams — From Our Expert Tutors

Mrs. Eze February 10, 2025 6 min read

With WAEC examinations around the corner, our team of expert tutors — many of whom are current and former WAEC examiners — have compiled their best advice to help you excel.

1. Create a Realistic Study Timetable

Start by listing all your subjects and allocating time based on difficulty. Give more hours to challenging subjects but don't neglect the ones you're good at. Aim for 4–6 hours of focused study daily, broken into 45-minute blocks with 15-minute breaks.

2. Master Past Questions

WAEC tends to repeat question patterns. Solving past questions from the last 10 years will build familiarity with the exam format, help you identify frequently tested topics, improve your speed and accuracy, and boost confidence.

3. Practice Your Practicals

For science students, practicals account for 40% of your total score. Common mistakes include not reading instructions carefully, poor drawing and labelling, incorrect use of apparatus, and not showing working for calculations. Visit our science labs for hands-on practice sessions.

4. Focus on Use of English

English is compulsory and many students underperform. Key areas to focus on include comprehension passages, summary writing, oral English, and essay writing.

5. Manage Exam Stress

  • Get adequate sleep (at least 7 hours) the night before
  • Eat a good breakfast on exam day
  • Arrive at the exam hall early
  • Read all instructions before starting
  • Do not spend too long on one question

6. Join a Study Group

Studying with peers helps reinforce learning. At Legacy Scholar, our small class sizes naturally create effective study groups where students support each other.

Final Advice

Start early, stay consistent, and believe in yourself. Remember — WAEC is designed to test what you've learned, not to trick you. With proper preparation, distinction grades are within your reach.

Good luck from all of us at Legacy Scholar!
